Sin City Movie Star Joseph Gordon LevittThe new Sin City Movie has just scored a major coupe! Joseph Gordon Levitt, or JGL to those who are either really hip or really lazy, was heavily rumored over the last week to be up for the role of Star Lord in the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  But, go ahead and file those rumors under “debunked”, as the Weinstein company has officially announced that Gordon Levitt will be playing a new character in the Sin City universe, Johnny.

Deadline first reported this news, and the role of Johnny was apparently first offered to Johnny Depp.  JGL sounds enthused about the project, and we certainly look forward to seeing what he can do in the dark Sin City universe with Robert Rodriguez at the helm.

You can also chalk this up as a big win for DC and Warner Brothers, as Joseph Gordon Levitt not playing Star Lord means keeping the super hot young star away from an iron clad Disney contract.  The Dark Knight Rises famously ended with JGL’s character being called Robin and being given the keys to the Batcave.  While DC hasn’t officially announced anything along the lines of a new Batman movie with JGL or a Nightwing movie or anything of the sort, the huge fan reaction certainly didn’t go un-noticed by them.  Disney, however, isn’t exactly known for playing well with others or with letting hot stars get away with just a quick cameo.  Take a look at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who was about to explode as the next big action star but instead got hooked into the Disney universe, becoming a family movie star with films like The Tooth Fairy.  We’re certainly not saying that JGL signing on for the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie would have locked him into a long line of family friendly kid films, but if the seven hundred picture deal that Sam Jackson signed is any sort of measurement, it’s a good bet that his entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have been a strong goodbye to the DC counterpart.

But that’s all conjecture and hearsay, and all we know for now is that Robert Rodriguez is working hard on making a sequel to the outstanding original Sin City movie, and he just landed a huge acting talent to help flesh out the dark dreary world that was given to us by Frank Miller.  So stay tuned for more on this movie as it develops!

dark universeDark Universe, A DC Supernatural Characters Movie, Is Actually Happening!

Guillermo del Toro, the special effects genius who gave us Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy 2 (still one of the best choreographed final fights I’ve ever seen) is apparently moving forward with plans for a movie tentatively titled Dark Universe.

He’s at the stage of looking for a writer right now for the script, and has let it slip that this film will include Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, and Spectre (among others, but he’s stated that giving a full roster will likely ruin some of the plot surprises).

While this is of course huge news for fans of these characters (and there’s plenty of those, for sure), this is even bigger news for DC properties in general.  It’s no mystery that DC has languished for years under the oppressive weight of Marvel properties, trying to get solid movie fanbase but stumbling with poorly constructed films like Green Lantern and Superman Returns.

Man of Steel certainly looks like it may break the I’m-not-Batman-but-I’m-still-good mold, but it’s still Superman.  It’s still a character that everyone knows, and more importantly that everyone has an opinion on.  What Dark Universe can do for DC is draw in a new fanbase, getting people who were genuinely unfamiliar with the characters on screen interested in finding out more about them and heading down to the local comic shop to do some research.

This isn’t to say that the future of DC movies rests solely on del Torro’s shoulders.  This is just a huge opportunity, and it’s good to know that it’s in the hands of a talented and proven director who can get some excitement brewing even at this stage in production.  DC has a plethora of underused characters who, should Dark Universe be successful, can maybe finally get their shot in the spotlight.  Hey, if Rocket Raccoon can be a movie star, why not Animal Man?

agent coulson

Rest in peace Agent Coulson, we will miss you.  But then again, maybe not for long.  Rumors have been swirling for a while now that the Son of Coul could be resurrected as Avengers member The Vision for the sequel, and that has fueled a huge surge of support for a character that is turning into a strong fan favorite.  But on the message boards of the net, I’m constantly seeing people raising a questioning eyebrow and wondering why Phil Coulson became such a popular character.

A search on Google for Agent Coulson now turns up over 2 million results, not too shabby for a guy that was just a point of contact between various heroes and S.H.I.E.L.D.  In fact, that’s nearly double the results for Pepper Potts, and she’s been a mainstay of Marvel Comics for decades.  So why did we take so quickly to this guy?  After all, in a world of Gods and iron soldiers, he’s just a regular guy.

There, however, is the rub.  One of the main reasons that people like comics, and even just fiction writing in general, is escapism.  But what comics provide more than just giving us a brief break from our regular lives is immersion in a different universe.  Not a perfect one by any means, in fact one far more flawed than our own in many ways.  But when we escape to this universe we get to walk along side our heroes.  When discussing the absolutely enormous popularity of Spiderman, Stan Lee once remarked that he feels it’s the mask that does it.  Because you can’t see anything about who Spiderman is when he’s in costume, it’s that much easier for us to feel like it could be us under that mask.  It could be you, swinging from building to building and being the hero of the day.

And that’s what Agent Coulson is.  He’s a hero, leading the assault on Iron Monger or blasting away at Loki, but at the end of it all he’s a regular guy.  One of us.  One of the biggest issues that writers and directors have with super hero movies is making the audience connect with the hero, but that’s not needed with Agent Coulson.  Phil’s just a guy who worked hard, rose in the ranks at his government job, and even got to meet one of his heroes, Captain America.  In fact, he even collects Captain America trading cards, just like we do.  Coulson represented a safe, easy bridge between us and them.  No need for an origin story to make him seem human, he is human.  And he gives us the idea that we too could run alongside these Gods and Heroes.

Maybe he’ll be back as The Vision, and maybe he won’t. But either way, thanks Phil for making us feel like everything we watched was possible.
